A tragic incident in Tennessee’s Savage Gulf State Park has left the hiking community in mourning after a hiker succumbed to a venomous snake bite.

On Thursday, August 8, emergency responders from the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency were called to a trailhead in Savage Gulf State Park around 12:30 p.m. local time.
According to agency director Matthew Griffith, the hiker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was approximately half a mile into a trail when the incident occurred. First responders, including fire and rescue teams, EMS personnel, and park rangers, quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid.
A witness reported that the hiker had picked up a snake, believed to be a timber rattlesnake, which then bit him on the hand. Despite rapid response efforts, the hiker was transported to a nearby hospital, where he tragically passed away due to his injuries.
Griffith noted that the hiker’s death appeared to be linked to an allergic reaction to the venom, though the official cause of death is still pending further investigation.
Understanding Timber Rattlesnakes
Timber rattlesnakes, identified as the likely culprit in this incident, are Tennessee’s largest and most dangerous venomous snake species, according to the state’s Wildlife Resources Agency.
These snakes typically grow to between 3 and 5 feet in length and are recognizable by their flat, wide heads, gray, yellow, or green-white bodies, and distinctive dark bands with a rust-colored stripe along their backs. Commonly found in mature, wooded forests and rocky hillsides, timber rattlesnakes are known to bask on rocks or hide near fallen logs.

The U.S. Forest Service notes that rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal, with less than 1 in 600 cases resulting in death. However, prompt medical attention is critical to ensure the best outcome.
