Russia unleashed a ferocious barrage of 574 drones and 40 missiles on Ukraine overnight, marking one of the heaviest attacks in weeks. The assault, which hit western regions far from the front lines, left one person dead, 15 injured, and raised fresh concerns as diplomatic efforts to end the war intensify.
Deadly Strikes Hit Western Ukraine
The Ukrainian military reported that the overnight bombardment targeted areas not typically in Russia’s crosshairs, including the western city of Lviv and the southwestern Transcarpathia region. In Lviv, one person was killed, and three others were injured as drone and missile strikes damaged more than 20 civilian buildings, including homes and a nursery.
In Transcarpathia’s town of Mukachevo, near the borders with Hungary and Slovakia, 15 people were wounded when cruise missiles struck a facility owned by a major U.S. electronics company, which produces coffee machines and household goods.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, noting that it targeted American business interests. “One of the missiles struck a major American electronics manufacturer in our westernmost region, leading to serious damage and casualties,” he wrote on social media on Thursday. The Ukrainian air force reported that the barrage included hypersonic, ballistic, and cruise missiles, launched from western Russia, the Black Sea, and Russian-occupied Crimea.
Of the 614 drones and missiles fired, Ukraine’s air defenses managed to stop 577, showcasing their resilience but also highlighting the scale of the attack—the largest since early July, when 728 drones and 13 missiles hit cities across the country.
Diplomatic Push Amid Escalating Violence
The attacks come as U.S. President Donald Trump leads efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia. Following a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House on Monday, Trump initially proposed a trilateral meeting with himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy. However, he later suggested stepping back, saying, “Now I think it would be better if they met without me… If necessary, I’ll go.”
Zelenskyy has expressed openness to meeting Putin in a neutral European country, naming Switzerland or Austria as possible venues, and not ruling out Istanbul. However, he dismissed Budapest as a location, citing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s close ties with Moscow. “I’m not saying that Orban’s policy was against Ukraine, but it was against supporting Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said on Thursday. Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has offered Budapest as a “fair and safe” place for talks, but Zelenskyy remains skeptical.
Despite these diplomatic moves, Zelenskyy noted that Russia has shown no real interest in meaningful negotiations. “There is still no sign from Moscow that they truly intend to engage in substantive negotiations,” he told reporters, underscoring the challenges of reaching a peace deal.
Russia’s Grip on Ukrainian Territory
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, its forces have seized much of the eastern Donbas region, including Luhansk and Donetsk, and now control roughly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014. The front lines have remained largely unchanged in recent months, with both sides making only small territorial gains amid intense fighting.
Zelenskyy reported that Russia is now shifting troops from the Kursk region to the southern Zaporizhzhia front, one of four Ukrainian regions Russia claims as its own. This buildup suggests Moscow is preparing for new offensives, even as peace talks are discussed.
Ukraine Fights Back
Ukraine, meanwhile, is stepping up its own attacks on Russian targets. The Ukrainian military said it struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region, which borders Donbas, driving up gasoline prices in Russia. Ukrainian forces also hit a Russian drone depot in the occupied city of Donetsk and other military facilities, aiming to disrupt Russia’s war machine.
The escalation in Russian airstrikes, particularly on civilian and Western-linked targets, has renewed Ukraine’s calls for more air defense systems from its allies. Sybiha emphasized that stronger defenses are critical to protecting lives and infrastructure from future attacks.
A War at a Crossroads
The latest bombardment underscores the delicate balance between diplomacy and violence in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While Trump’s push for talks has raised hopes, Russia’s aggressive actions signal a lack of willingness to compromise. The targeting of western Ukraine, far from the usual eastern battlegrounds, suggests Moscow is expanding its campaign to pressure Ukraine and its allies.
For Ukraine, the stakes are immense. The country faces relentless attacks on its cities, infrastructure, and economy, with civilians bearing the brunt. The strike on a U.S.-linked facility in Mukachevo adds a new layer of complexity, potentially straining relations between Washington and Moscow.
